Luke Miller didn’t set out to make a gay video game. He says he was inspired by science fiction, point and click adventures, and Australian gay culture. He mentions games like The Sims, which allows players to have the same-sex relationship.

Dorian the mage, in Dark Ages III’s storyline, is a complex and interesting character. His sexuality doesn’t make him a cliché. Other notable examples include Overwatch’s gay characters and Borderlands’ playable NPCs.

Gay characters and themes are still relatively rare, despite the growing popularity of videogames. But for those who enjoy the odd game with a distinctly queer twist, there are plenty of options. The developers in Eureka, Oregon and Melbourne, Australia are trying to change this. Luke Miller, the creator behind the sci-fi game My Ex-Boyfriend the Space Tyrant did not set out to create a gay game. However, he wanted his characters to all be homosexual.

The result is an incredibly campy game that’s full of sexual references and jokes. From a talking-elevator that gives sexy quotes to a giant dog in outer space named Boner, this game is openly gay.

It’s not without heart. At times, the game is surprisingly serious. As the player advances through the narrative, the character gains confidence and comes to understand his identity.

Since Nintendo censored its Banjo-Kazooie video games in 1988 and told the cross-dressing Jolly Roger to “stop wear her hat, she was not allowed to wear pigtails.” The gamer now rules and developers have many options to add LGBT content.

Gaming is a wonderful way to live the life a character who is different from us. The vicarious feeling can be more intense in games with a LGBT theme, which is a genre that’s not well-received by the mainstream gaming industry.

Thanks to independent developers, they are changing this by creating their own games. These independent games take the form visual novels or of dating simulations. They focus on themes and gay characters that are authentic and not forced. Coming Out on Top, for example, is one of these titles.

As its name suggests, the game lets you experience being a college senior gay who’s trying to come out to his two closest friends. It’s a simulation of dating, but also has the feeling of an old ‘Choose Your Own Adventure book’. Like those books, the game lets you choose from a variety of potential men and build relationships with real emotional depth.

While this game is loaded with gay content, it never received a Steam Greenlight approval, which has kept it out of mainstream gaming. Some gamers claim that this is for a very good reason.

Adult gay games

Animation has been used to tell diverse adult stories for a long time. From MLM space defenders to queer witches coming of age, and sapphic super-villains, it’s a platform that works well. The inclusion of LGBTQ themes and characters is becoming more common in video games.

Riot Games’ popular multiplayer online role playing game League of Legends added for the first-time a romance between the mage Diana, and her partner Leona. Even though the fantasy world is fictional, both women’s pasts are very real. This is a small step, but an important one towards promoting diversity and inclusivity in games.

Celeste is an example of a character that has been well developed. This platform game follows a girl who is transgender on her climb up Mount Everest. Maddy Thorson (a transgender woman) designed, wrote, directed and produced the game.

The Life Is Strange games are a great way to see LGBTQ representation. True Colors is the third game in which players can select a bisexual character and follow her romantic storylines. Other games such as Mass Effect allow players to pursue same-sex romances. Some publishers have content restrictions that prevent these options from being available.

Gay adult games

There have been homosexual themes in videogames for a long time. Bioware’s Dragon Age and its options for same-sex relationships, The Sims’ man-on-man pairings and even the gender-bending Birdo of Super Mario 2 are just a few examples. However, there aren’t many real trailblazers amongst gay titles. Usually, the homosexual theme is a mere side-note.

Fushigi Yougi was the first to break that mould. Originally published as a girls manga by Yuu Watsuse, this fantasy series is set in the magical world of ancient China. There are 18 volumes. It understands the pressures that make young girls compete with each other, and pushes them to find a more fulfilling way of life. The book also knew that friendship played a big role in your success, just as much as magic.

Fushigi Yuugi was adapted into an anime television series and three original video animation (OVA) releases. The TV series ran from April 1995 to March 1996 on TV Tokyo and spawned two prequels in the form of the Genbu Saga manga and Fushigi Yuugi Eikoden OVA series.

Megumi Nishizaki wrote the thirteen-volume Light Novel Series that followed the anime. The first seven books describe the Celestial warriors Suzaku, Seiryuu and Yui. However, the final six novels take place in a different timeline with Miaka and Yui as both Priestesses for the Suzaku.
