Many older RPGs include gay-friendly features. For example, the 1988 Dragon Warrior CD includes a minor transgender antagonist, Birdo, who is mistaken by other characters for female due to their attractive and feminine manner of speaking. However, Nintendo censored this character in subsequent releases. This was before the introduction of the ESRB which allowed games to include blood, female enemies and even more sexually suggestive content.
Recently, the Mass Effect series has included options for the player to develop romantic relationships of the same gender with NPCs. The games let players select whether they wanted either a male or female romance. Mass Effect 3 as in the 2017’s Mass Effect Andromeda also let them romance a transgender Niles.
Some other games with explicit content include Life Is Strange: True Colors and Saints Row. Both games feature many romance options that do not rely on biological sex, and add depth to characters with their well-written motivations and personalities.
